Milla Kicks Ass (Again)

UltravioletI read a handful of reviews before setting out to see Ultraviolet. The most memorable, that didn't mention the word “turd,” contained:

...Ultraviolet functions best as a multi-million dollar commercial for Milla Jovovich's personal trainer.

Cha! Why else would I see it, besides to watch Ms. Jovovich kick some ass while looking smokin' hot in the process? And I gotta say, UV delivers on that score.

Kurt Wimmer usually gets mentioned in the same league as the abysmal Uwe Boll. UV suffers from the usual shortcomings:

  • Incomprehensible dialog (who says these things?)
  • An incongruent storyline
  • Lousy direction (the action direction works in this one, but borrows from many other, obvious sources)

The movie does manage to showcase some really cool, cyber-punkish technology, such as:

  • Gravity Levelers - Devices that allow the user to arbitrarily anchor him/herself to any surface, denying the usual effects of gravity. (An early chase in the film uses these devices well, allowing Violet to run her BMW bike up the side of buildings, etc.)
  • Zero-dimensional storage - The ability to store massive amounts of weapons and tools in zero-dimension space, where they take up no volume but can be reconstituted instantly at will. (Now we know where our heroine hides all her wonderful toys.

Don't expect any Oscar-winning performances or a decent storyline, but if you go for the action, UV won't disappoint.
